Dominic Monaghan, best known for his role as Merry in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, had a candid interview with Yahoo TV Facebook Live in which he spoke openly about the massive role, his newest projects and even his childhood crushes.
The 39-year-old British actor opened up the interview with a talk about his favorite movies, as well as the productions that he has participated in.
When it comes to his most underrated movies, Monaghan said that Pet ranked as one of his all-time favorites. Pet is a relatively low-budget psychological thriller in which Monaghan plays a lonely and shy guy who becomes obsessed once again with a school crush after they meet accidentally. The character is named Seth, he doesn’t have many friends and he’s never had a girlfriend before. Seth assumes that a connection with his high school crush does exist. As a result, he holds her captive underneath the animal shelter that he’s employed by.
In Monaghan’s words, Pet is reminiscent of Fatal Attraction in terms of the dark love obsession that the film portrays. At the same time, Monaghan said that the film does have a number of dark comedic moments that lighten up the mood.
Pet opened in theaters on December 2, 2016. Regardless of the fact that the film has a relatively low Metacritic score (39), audiences seem to enjoy the production a lot more than the critics do. The film has a 5.9 score on IMDB and people who saw it write that it does get better as it progresses.
When asked about his own crushes, Monaghan said that he was a massive fan of Princess Lea from Star Wars as a kid. Carrie Fischer was beautiful in her Princess Lea costume and especially impressive for a young boy in the gold bikini scene, Monaghan reminisced.
The interview obviously had to head in a Lord of the Rings direction, as well.
Monaghan said that he still keeps in touch with his fellow Lord of the Rings co-stars. It’s a well-known fact that Monaghan, Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Billy Boyd (Pippin) became close friends during the filming of the trilogy.
Filming the trilogy almost felt like the three actors went to university together, Monaghan said in the interview. He confirmed that they still kept in touch and he even confirmed that he was about to meet with Boyd for a dinner on the night when the interview took place.
